How Long Does it Take for AHCCCS to Approve My Application?

The Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCC) provides Arizona families who qualify for federal Medicaid coverage access to health insurance.

This program is how Arizona partners with the federal government to distribute federal health and social services funding to eligible families. It also collaborates with health insurers to provide insurance coverage programs for patients.

Medical assistance, including dental services, is also available to children under 21 under AHCCCS-sponsored health insurance policies.

You can find general information about AHCCCS, including participating insurers and health plans, here.

How Long Will It Take to Receive AHCCCS Health Plan Coverage?

After you submit your application for AHCCCS coverage, the decision time will depend partly on your circumstances at the time of application. The more urgent your need for services, the faster AHCCCS will consider your application.

AHCCCS has three different periods for deciding on your application:

  1. If you or your child is hospitalized when you submit the application, you will get the fastest consideration, usually within seven days.
  2. If the applicant is pregnant, then the decision period is approximately 20 days from the application date.
  3. If neither of the two circumstances applies, then your application will be decided upon within 45 days.

Are There Any Additional Approval Requirements After My Application?

If AHCCCS requires more information to decide on your application, you may receive a letter stating what is needed or a request for a phone call interview.

If a telephone interview is necessary, be prepared with the following:

  • Identification verification
  • Employment and Income verification
  • Social Security numbers for members of your family
  • Citizenship verification

You can send any requested information to AHCCCS by mail or by fax.

  • If you send information by mail, only send copies of documents instead of the originals.
  • If you fax the materials, including a cover sheet with the fax is recommended.

How Will I Know If AHCCCS Has Approved My Application?

While your application is pending, you can monitor its status online at the following site: Health-e-Arizona Plus

When a decision is made regarding your case, you will be mailed a letter with the results. You can also monitor the status of your application online at Health-e-Arizona Plus.
