If your child has a dental emergency, here is what to do:
- Contact our office at (602) 854-8204. If you are calling after our regular office hours, stay on the line and you will be directed to our emergency services.
- Or, if you prefer, you can schedule an emergency appointment with us online:
- At the top of our website, click on “Book Online Now.”
- In the information box that appears, choose whether you are a new or existing patient, then choose “Emergency” as the reason for the appointment.
- Then, choose an appointment time from the available options.
What is a Dental Emergency?
AHCCCS is a federal Medicaid program that the state of Arizona administers. The federal Medicaid program defines “emergency services” as being medically necessary, having symptoms that are of acute severity (usually pain), and which if not provided will have consequences like putting your health in serious jeopardy or risking serious impairment or dysfunction to a bodily organ or body part.
Under this definition, a broken tooth can require emergency services because it is medically necessary, subjects the victim to acute pain, and if not treated will risk serious dysfunction to the affected tooth.
The best non-technical indicator of a dental emergency is usually severe pain, more than your child would ordinarily experience with a cavity or a sore tooth. Examples of dental conditions that can require emergency treatment include:
- Teeth that have been knocked out of their sockets.
- Teeth that are broken, chipped, or cracked.
- Severe toothaches.
- An abscess on the gums.
- Injury to the inner cheek or tongue from accidentally biting them, or from a trauma to the mouth.
- Inability to open the mouth after an accident.
Note: a broken jaw is a dental emergency, but one that requires more than dental attention alone. If you believe your child has a broken jaw, then go to the nearest emergency medical facility first.
How Does AHCCCS Help Pay for Child Emergency Dental Care?
Anyone covered by AHCCCS has access to emergency dental care to at least some extent. Adults 21 years and older, for example, are covered for up to $1,000 in emergency dental services annually.
Children, on the other hand, are covered under AHCCCS for emergency dental services with no copay requirement and no limit on how much AHCCCS will pay.
